Assignment #2: Author's Note, Question 2

"Some readers admired the boy immensely for his courage and noble ideas; others fulminated that he was a reckless idiot, a wacko, a narcissist who perished out of arrogance and stupidity--and was undeserving of the considerable media attention he received."

From what you have read thus far in the author's note as to what McCandless did, and without knowing the entire story, what is your opinion? Is he "admirable" and "noble," or is he "a wacko" and "a narcissist who perished out of stupidity?"

Please respond in at least 5-6 sentences by no later than 11:59pm Wednesday February 2nd.

  1. With only reading this much of the story, I believe that he is admirable and noble. This is because he does what he believes is right no matter what other people think about him. He went against what other people thought and followed through with his beliefs. Some people view nobility and heroics as stupidity because there is a risk that the "hero" will not survive or has to make a decision that others do not understand. His heroics are a way for us to try to act our lives as well. That is why I believe the Chris is admirable and noble.

  2. Once again I feel like withholding strong judgement. One can see how going out into nature for the betterment of ones own self is brave and admirable in that respect. Chris did, however, take little care in his endeavor. His actions, though done for good reasons, are rather naive. Enlightenment does little good for a man who can't pass it on.

  3. From what I have read in the author's note I believe that McCandless is very admirable and courageous. He went against the basic ideas of society and did what he believed in. People who believed that he was narcissistic and perished out of stupidity believed that his decisions were strange to what they were used to. Mark D

  4. From what I have read so far, I believe that he is both admirable, and "a narcissist who perished out of stupidity." What he did was very admirable. He gave all of his money to charity, and went away for a while. On the other hand, he thought that anyone could practice the ideals of Emmerson, which was not the case. Henry David Thoreau was able to follow through on Emmerson's ideas because he did not compleatly remove himself from society.--Mike Sheridan

  5. From what I have read thus far, I believe that he is both noble and admirable, and wacko. The fact that he gave all his money to chairty and that he gave up everything he had was admirable. I wouldn't have had the courage to give up everything like he did. I do feel like he went in so unprepared that it was a poor lack of judgement on his part. I also feel like that he took it to the extreme with trying to live out the ideas of Transcendentalism.

  6. From my reading thus far, I strongly believe that McCandless is both noble and admirable. He gave all his money that was most likely self earned, to charity. He also gave away his belongings. To do such an act is very admirable because not many people could do that today. His courageous beliefs is what stands out most and to some is seen as "wacko" however, its what makes him such a commendable human being.

  7. what Chris set out to do was very admirable and noble. Not many people in today's world would go so far as to give away all of their possesions and without a second thought, take to the wilderness and accept it with open arms. He could have gone out there more prepared but in my oppinion, that still dosnt make him a "wacko".

  8. To say Chris McCandles was a "wacko" or "a narcississt who perished out of stupidity" would not be the correct usage of words. Yes, it was immature and ignorant of him to leave straight out of college and not to tell anyone he was leaving or where he was going, but in a spiritual sense, he wanted to be independent, on his own, and thriving with nature. The possibility of someone dying soon after going to survive in the nature with little but the two hands you were given at birth, it is greatly surprising that he even survived as long as 4 months. He is noble in that he would want to be one with nature and live life to the fullest using the purest resources he could. But at a level of stupidity, he did not tell anyone where he was going and how long he was going to be there. I feel that he might still be alive if someone was going to keep in contact with him.

  9. I think what Chris did was admirable and noble. He gave away all his money to charitys and all his belongings to less fortunate. While I do believe that living out in the wild was noble of him to do I think the way he went about it made him seem like a "Wacko." He was underpacked, had no expirence, and wasn't aware of what was ahead of him. But I still believe this made him noble and admirable

  10. Dylan is pretty spot on. I think the fact that he gave away such a massive amount of money, is admirable to say the least. I think he was a little bit of a " wacko" because of the fact he went in with such little supplies. It was both a bold and noble move on his part to go in with such little. The money he gave away also made him avery admirable of generous person.

  11. I think Chris McCandless was definitely very "admirable and noble," but he was also a little "wacko." It's kind of crazy that he would stay out in the nature like that for that long, especially when he wasn't that prepared. The bravery in him for doing so made him noble on the other hand. I don't think him and his publicity was stupid it all. He deserved all that publicity andI also think that everyone should give him credit instead of making fun of him. He should be known as noble and honored, especially since he died for all of this.

  12. I believe that Chris McCandles was an admirable and noble man because he did not care about what others think of him, and many people do not obtain that quality that he has. Healso gave away money to help those who do not have as much as his and therefore, i think that enhances his quality of being an admirable man. Those who do good are admired for their actions. He believed as he wanted to, and did not have concerns as to what others thought of him.He never second guessed his actions

  13. From what i have read so far i can tell that Chris is a very commendable man. He appears to me as a man who deserves great amounts of respect. There are not many people in todays world that would go out and do the things he did. Especially with the small amount that he carried with him into the wilderness.
