Assignment # 9: Chapter 3, Question 3

On page 22, Chris sends one last note to his parents before he begins his "epic odyssey." What is your reaction to his note? What can you infer about the relationship that he has with his family from his last letter?  Chris told his family, "I think I am going to disappear for awhile" (page 21).  Do you believe that he intended to ever come back?

Respond in minimally 5-6 sentences.

  1. My reaction to the note is that it is not very thoughtful or considerate. It seems that Chris was very distant from his family and preferred being that way. Still, they were his parents, who had the best of intensions concerning their son. It was rude and heartless not to even really say goodbye, or at least let them know that everything would be okay. Chris just left, knowing that his parents would eventually discover his disappearance, and be terrified and confused as to what had happened. When Chris told his mother that he might disappear for a while, I think he himself wasn't really sure if he would return or not, but he didn’t care either.

  2. My reaction to Chris' not was that he didn't put much meaning into it. He must have been not close to his family and didn't plan on changing it. Even though CHris didn't have a good relationship with his family i think at least going to see them and saying goodbye in person would have been the right thing to do. When Chris said he was going to disappear for a while I think he thought he was going to return but didnt know when he would come back or how long it will take

  3. I feel that Chris' note tells that he was extermely distant from his loved ones. He did not want to fix that anytime in the near future. I feel that even though his parents loved him, his not saying good bye was a negative thing for him to do. He hould have said good bye to his family, especially his parents. This is because he did not have the intentions of coming back. If ever in a predicament that one should have thought of not seeing family ever again, that person should always say good bye no matter how strained the relationship is. Chris did not mean the not in the slightest, he just did it as a formality, as well as a little bit of consideration to the family that raised him and loved him.

  4. My reaction to his note was unpersonable. Also I think that he wasn't close to his family because he didn't even say goodbye before he went. I feel like he never intented to come back. He never he was never going to come out of Alaska. I feel like out of consideration for his family he should have told them that he was leaving and that he might never make it out alive.

  5. Honestly i think I wasnt't planning on coming back to my family. I think my mother and father were very nervous for my well being. Their reaction was that they paniced. I'd imagine anyone would, however my relationship with my family is misrepresented. I love my family deeply, my leave of absence had nothing to do with them. I left out of free will and wanted to live the simplest life, as well as have a risky life. If dying for something i love is what living in nature means, then thats what i would be willing to do.

  6. He seemed not to really care about his family or what they thought. Apparently he wasn't very close to them. If he was he should have been more sympathetic and caring. I feel he never planned on coming back and he didn't even bother to go say goodbye to them. This note basically seems to me as something he felt obligated to write but didn't want to. He didn't even put any effort into it and didn't have any sorrow for leaving far away from his family and possibly not even coming back.

  7. The note makes me think he had no care for his family. The note seems like any other note someone would write to give an update today. Today, though, communication is instant. One would think letter writing would be more caring, even if just a little. The letter was so generic I didn't think it was the letter at first. It certainly didn't seem like how one's last words with their family should go, secret or not. It appears to me, he may have been distant from his parents. The parents do seem rather unobservant, as they didn't question the disappearing line. Finally, no, it doesn't seem he wanted to come back. He gave no inclination of second thought. One could argue that the generic letter shows he didn't view the trip as important; he would simply do it and be done. This is , however, contradictory to the actions we know he took.

  8. This note makes me think that he has no love for his family. He seemed very distant with them. It seems to me like the wanted to write to them, but did not know what or how to say what he was doing. He saw it as something needed for his parents. The note talks about how he is doing this, and that he didnt think that it was a bad idea.

  9. In my opinion, I think that Chris' note to his parents wasn't meaningful. I think this because afterall, he wanted to get away from them and society so that shows that he doesnt have much care for them. On the other hand it shows that he did care about their feelings and he wanted them to not worry about him and his well-being. I think that he didn't intend on coming back because that point wasnt stressed whatsoever in the note.

  10. In my opinion this note made me feel that he had no deep connection with his family. He did care about their feelings but had no love for them. I think that he had no intentions in returning home. In the note he seemed like he had not a care in the world and was completely stress free.

  11. I feel like there was little or no thought put into the note he left. When he said "I think i'm going to disappear for a while" he didnt know for sure if he was going to come back from his adventure alive or not. I think the fact that he left a note at all means that he does care about his family, if only a little bit.

  12. I think that the message that CHris left showed that he didn't care about his family or the people who loved him. The note showed some obvious tension between him and his family and it wasn't considerate. Whatever happened between Chris and his family was in the past and he didn't show any signs of wanting to change it. However that fact that Chris even wrote a note showed that some part of him was thinking about his family. I do believe Chris wanted to come out, I don't believe that Chris wenrt into the woods on a suicide mission

  13. My reaction to Chris' last note to his family is that there is not much in the letter for someone who has not talked to their parents in that long amount of time. I feel his relationship could be strained or he just does not have that much in common with his parents. His letter specifically mentions grades and a brief summary of how he is doing. He does not tell them any major events that have happened and he does not really mention what he is doing after college. He tells then he going to disappear for a while. He does not give them a specific amount of time and he does not tell them where he is going. I am not really that he intended anything. I think his motive might have been simply to just go with the flow and cross the bridge when he reached it. This somewhat fits his way of thinking. He said he did not want to know what day it was or what time. So I feel his way of thinking is to worry about now and now about later.
