Assignments 27-31: Chapter 5

27) Compare and Contrast Chris with his idol, Jack London (pg. 44)

28) In this chapter, how did Chris work to prepare for Alaska? (2 examples)

29) What does Chris accept or refuse to accept from Jan as he is leaving Bullhead City? How does this continue to characterize Chris?

31) What fact do we find out about Chris that serves as another parallel to Thoreau? (page 44)

  1. 27.Chris and Jack were alike because they both loved Alaska and Chris loved how Jack portrayed it. They were both alike on their outlooks of government and the role it should play. They were also alike because of how they both liked being grimy.
    28. He worked out every morning so he could get in shape for the hard life of the wilderness. He would also discuss backcountry survival strategies with Bob.
    29. He was offered more money, he refused this and this shows how he was really an anti-aristocrat. This shows how he really wanted nothing to do with the government. It also shows how humble he is, he was offered more money for helping out with work but he refused because he thought the good times he had selling the books was worth more than the money itself.
    30. We can add his arrival at Bullhead City in October 1991, and we can add him working at McDonald's in October 1991.
    31. That Chris too had someone very in love with him but couldn't be with because of the age difference.

  2. 27, They both had the same thought about government and how it should play a lesser role.They both had a love for nature and Alaska and Chris liked Jacks outlook on Alaska.
    28, 1,Learn back country survival skills with Bob. 2, He got in shape and exercised daily to prepare his body.
    29,He denied more money, this shows how chris didn't like the government an was an anti-aristocrat. He also refused the money because he found so much joy from selling the books he thought it out weighed the money.
    30, October 1991- Chris arrived at Bullhead city
    October 1991- Chris started working at Mcdonald's
    31, That Chris had a lover but the age difference would keep them apart Mark D

  3. 27. They both felt that nature held all of the answers. Chris spent 113 days in the wilderness, while Loondon spent only 1 winter.

    28. Bob and Chris discussed survival skills and Chris did excersizes every morning.

    29. Chris accepts some knives, long underwear, and he doesn't take money from them.

    30. October 1991- Chris arrives at Bullhead City, Arizona
    December 9, 1991- Chris writes a letter to Jan in response to them comming to see them.

    31. A parallel to Thoreau is that he was not a recluse, and enjoyed being around other people. He had a good time when he was around other people at the swap meet.

  4. 27) Chris and his idol Jack London both followed the same theories. They felt strong dislike towards the government and wanted the simple life in nature.
    28) Chris prepared for Alaska by coming up with different survival skills with Bob and also exercising everyday.
    29) Chris accepted a couple of different objects, like knives and underwear. He denied money and this showed he was a person of good character.
    30) October 1991: Chris arrived at Bullhead City. October 1991: Chris started working at McDonald's.
    31) The parallel is that Chris was actually very outgoing and loved being around people. He wasn't anti-social or anything along those lines and he was very in love with someone but their age difference kept them apart.

  5. 27.) Both Chris and his idol, Jack London, both had the same theories about things. They each wanted to live a simple life away from chaos.

    28.) Bob and Chris prepared by exercising everyday and coming up with strategies to live out in the wild.
    29.)Chris is offered money although he does not take it because he didn’t need it. He did however accept long underwear to stay warm and knives to hunt.

    October 1991- Chris started working at a Mcdonald's

    31.) The parallel is that Chris was actually outgoing. He wasn't anti-social and he was in love with someone but their age difference was in the way of having a relationship.

  6. 1.). The ideas of glorification of the primordial world and his championing of the great unwashed were both of these men ideas. The difference between them is London only spent a winter out in the wilderness and McCandless overlooked this fact when he was reading and observing what he had written.
    2.) He prepared for Alaska by he got a job at McDonalds. Also he got in shape and exercised daily.
    3.) Jan and Bob offered him money to take with him on his trip and he refused it., this shows that he was Anti-aristocrat. He accepted knives and a few clothes.
    4.) December 9, 1991- Sent Jan a letter
    May 1991- Left Las Vegas
    5.) The fact that he learn about Chris is that he was in love with someone also but couldn’t be together because the age difference.

  7. 27) Both Chris and Jack loved nature. The both thought nature was the answer. Chris spent 113 days in nature while Jack spent only one winter. Both also were into Alaska.

    31) We also found out that if there was less of an age difference, Chris could possibly have fallen deeply in love. But the age gap made Chris hesitant and so he did not persue the girl the was trying to grasp his attention.

  8. 27. Both of these men had the same desire which was to live a simple life. On that was not only easy but away from all the chaos of the real worlds. They also shared the same view, ideas, and thoughts on different things.
    28. They prepared by planning out how they would survive in the wild. They would also exercise every day in order to be fit for their journey.
    29. Chris was offered money but would not take it because he had no use for it. He did accept some things that would help him survive and make his journey a little more comfortable though. What he did accept was long underwear for warmth and knives that he could use for hunting.

    October 1991- Started working at McDonald’s
    31. We learn that if there was a lack in the age gap, Chris may have very well fallen deeply in love. Due to the extreme age gap he did not head the attempts of the girl that was trying to draw his attention.

  9. 27. Chris and Jack London are very alike in many ways. For one, they both greatky appose the government and are always trying to escape its grasp. Second they both have a profound love and respect for Alsaka.
    28. Chris exercised everyday to prepare himself for him journey. He also Discussed survival stategies with Bob in order to get a better idea of what he was going to have to deal with in Alaska.
    29. Chris refused to accept the extra money that Jan was offering to him. This shows once again his extreme independance and selflessness.
    30. Chris Arrived in Bullhead city, AZ in October 1991, and he also started his work at McDonalds in October of 1991.
    31. Like Thoreau, Chris had a lover, but due to the gap between their ages, they couldnt be together.

  10. 27. Chris was like Jack London, because they both fantisized about surviving in the wild. The both dreamed about going on adventures and living with nature. They were not the same though because Jack only wrote about adventures, while Chris actually lived them.

    28. The way that Chris prepared for Alaska was he would do calisthenic every morning to get into shape and he discussed back counrty survival strategies with Bob, who was a self-styled survivalist.

    29. Chris accepts a ride to his destination, Chris accepts some knives, and he declines the money that is offered to him. This continues to show that he has no value for money and that he is determined to get around on his own. I also think he is trying to make a statement that he will not accept anything from anyone, he wants to earn everything.

    31. Chris was very social. He had a good time with people. When he went to Niland he socialized with many people and made friends with every one of them. A girl fell in love with him, but he felt that she was too young for him.

  11. 27. Chris and Jack were similar because they both loved Alaska and Chris loved the way Jack London portrayed it. They both enjoyed going into nature as well. They both had the same idea of government should play a lesser role in the lives of the people. However they were different because unlike Chris Jack never went on an Odyssey but instead he wrote about them

    28. The two things Chris did to prepare for his adventure were every morning he would work out to get in shape and also he would discuss survival strategies with Bob

    29. Chris accepted knives and some pairs of long underwear, however he refused the money they offered .
