Project

Creating your own "Odyssey"

Chris' dream was to carry out his "Alaskan Odyssey." The object of this mini-project is for you to get an idea as to the amount of effort that is involved in the planning process of a trip of this extent. This will hopefully provide a little more insight as to the drive and determination that Chris possessed.

I am cutting back on the amount of blog posts this week, which means that a great amount of effort should be placed into this project.

Task:

First, I would like you to answer these 7 questions below and preferably type them (you may post them to the blog, email or just hand them in). Secondly, I would like you to create a mini -journal discussing minimally 5 entries from your "travels." Entries should be minimally 8-12 sentences. Lastly, I would like you to create a collage encompassing all of the below questions. Include pictures of the places that you would go, the items that you would bring, words and phrases that represent your inspirations and thoughts, etc. This is a great opportunity to get creative! The more details that you provide in your collage, the better the grade. Due and to be presented to the class on Thursday February 17th.

1) Where would you like your Odyssey to end? For example: Chris' ended at Alaska. How many days, months, years would you like your odyssey to cover? Must minimally be 30 days. Example: Thoreau's was 2 years, 2 months and 2 days.

2) Through which states, countries, islands, etc, would you choose to travel before reaching your destination. Choose minimally 5 and when you are choosing, look at a map to make sure that it is possible/ logical to do so. For example: Chris went from Virginia to Willowcreek to Carthage to Needles, CA to the Mexican Border to LA to Las Vegas to Arizona to South Dakota to Canada etc.

3) If you were only able to bring a backpack of the following dimensions and it only held a maximum of 8 things comfortably, what would you bring with you? Take note that you will want to travel lightly and simply. The dimensions of the backpack that you will bring are: 12”W x 21”H x 8”D.

4) You have just graduated college and you have $2500 saved, will you donate your money to charity or take it with you? If you choose to donate it, where would you donate it and why? If you choose to keep it, explain how you will use it along the way on your journey. Site specific instances and expenses that you will forsee having.

5) Chris decided to go alone on his Odyssey, though he did meet many people whose lives he changed. Would you go alone on your Odyssey? If so, then why? Would you invite another person along with you on your Odyssey? If so, then who would it be and why? Take note that if you have someone join you, that doesnt mean that you will have any more money or materials.

6) What would your philosophy of nature be? Example: Thoreau went into nature to live "simply and deliberately" and to "suck the marrow out of life" before he woke up and realized that he had never lived.

7) When you reach the destination of your odyssey, what do you wish to explore? What is your reasoning behind choosing this destination? How long will you spend at your destination? What will you do with your time there? Create 5 journal entries reflecting upon your "experience" at your destination.

  2. 3. We will take a hunting rifle, box of ammunition, box of granola bars, a machete, a knife, a hatchet, 200 feet of rope, and a radio.

    4. We would choose to keep all $2500. We would use the money for buying food and housing on the way to Washington, and then use what ever is left over for plane tickets on the way back.

    5. We choose to not bring someone else, because we would not want to be responsible for someone else’s actions.

    6. Our philosophy of nature would be that nature is unforgiving, so we have to improvise, adapt, and overcome whatever obstacles come into our way.

    7. When we reach our destination, we will spend the rest of the five months in Washington. We will go hunting, fishing, and sightseeing.

  3. 1. Our odyssey will end in Maui, Hawaii. It will end last for a total time of, ETERNITY. We will die there, rightfully.
    2. The states we will travel through are Massachusetts, Connecticut, Arizona, California, Ohio, and ending up in Hawaii.
3.We would bring three pairs of clothes each, we would each bring a bike, we would each bring a casset player, one of us would bring a cellular phone, a knife, each of us would bring a canteen that could be refilled multiple times, we wwould also bring a lifetime supplies of drink mixes such as kool-aid things that when added to water make a delicous drink, one camera that could take pictures, we would also bring a medical kit with alot of life saving things.
    4. We would donate 1,000 dollars of our money. we would use another 1,000 dollars to buy our plane tickets. We would spend about 1,000 in staying at various places, this money will last us for the rest of our lives.
    5. To start the trip out it would just be us two on the trip. If any people we meet on the way to our destination would like to come along with us they are welcome. As long as they pay for their own supplies and food.
    6. We would be seeking the beauty and simplicity of nature. We do not need an auto mobile to get transported we would travel on our own time and travel (other than the plane to get there) by our bikes.
    7. When we get to our destsination we plan on traveling throughout the land and exploring finding new plants and things that benifit ourselves. We chose our destination because it is a very open and free place to live. A place where one could enjoy the fruits of nature at its best.

We have decided to go on a journey to the State of Washington. We will be making several stops along the way, to visit family and see marvelous sights. We are going to Harrisburg, PA to visit Henry’s relatives. We are trying to get to Pierre South Dakota for the Fourth of July. We also want to make a stop in Sioux Falls to visit Henry’s cousin. We have already planned what we will be doing when we get to Washington. We plan on going hunting. Right now, we will be hunting caribou, but our plans might change by the time we get there.

It is Mother’s Day. I am sending a postcard to our parents so that they will know what is going on, and that we are all right. We have been very busy lately. We have hitchhiked from Columbus, Ohio to Dayton. Then we walked for a couple days, surviving on the food that they gave us. We also ate the berries we could, and bought a couple of lunches and dinners at small restaurants. There food reminded us of our parent’s cooking. It made us a little homesick, but we are still having fun. It will be nice when we finally finish this adventure.

It is now Father’s Day. I can not believe that we have already made it to Iowa. Henry and I are in the capital city of Iowa, called Des Moines. We will be traveling to Sioux City soon, and then be crossing over into South Dakota. After that, we plan on staying at Henry’s relatives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for a while. That will be a welcome relief, because Des Moines is really the only interesting thing in Iowa. There are only so many corn fields that you can see. It defiantly gets boring after a while.

I can’t believe that we actually made it to South Dakota for the Fourth of July. It is really nice to stay in the huge house that Henry’s cousin owns. It overlooks a big forest. We spent an entire night lying on hammocks looking at the stars, which is something that we have grown to appreciate much more. They have fireworks that light up the entire sky. There are no mountains out here, so you can see the fireworks from everywhere. People out here seem to celebrate Independence Day just like everywhere else. Seeing these fireworks reminds us that no matter where we are, this is still the best country in the world.

We are finally in Washington. We have decided that the first thing we are doing will be to go caribou hunting near the west coast. We are using the rifle that Henry brought with him. It is a Mosin Nagant. It is defiantly big enough to take down a caribou out here. Our trip has been very exciting. The caribou hunt will be a great exclamation point to put on the end of our journey. We can not wait to go back and see our parents and friends again. It will be very nice.
