Assignment 3: Chapter 1, Question 1

On page 7 of the book, Chris states,"I don't want to know what time it is. I don't want to know what day it is or where I am. None of that matters."

From Walden: Where I Lived and Solitude by Thoreau, find 3 specific quotes from the text that parallel or could be taken as inspiration for Chris' thinking.

Next to each quote, explain why you chose it and how you believe it parallels Chris' school of thought.

Due: Wednesday by 11:59pm.

Students: Please remember that all posts and responses are academic assignments. Make sure that any language used and content discussed reflect the same standards for typical homework or in-class assignments.

  1. Quote #1- "Why should we with such hurry and waste of life?" Page 902

I chose this quote as a parallel to Chris' school of thought because it says how worrying about time is a waste of our life. I chose it because in my thoughts, Chris is stating that time is a pointless worry.

Quote #2- "I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time." Page 918

I choose this quote because I believe that it is saying that the time didnt matter because he didn't spend it with other people so it was irrelivant. It parallels Chris' thinking becuase none of it matters if we are alone and happy.

Qoute #3- "Children, who play life, discern its true law and relations more clearly than men, who fail to live it worthily, but also think that they are wiser by experiance, that is, by failure." Page 904

I chose this quote because it shows what time does and we know that this is what it does. Chris says that "none of it matters." This quote shows this part of the quote perffectly because as time goes on we lose the importance of life and we need to remember the true happiness and not let time take that away from us.

  2. Quote 1-have heard of a man lost in the woods and dying of famine and exhaustion at the foot of a tree, whose loneliness was relieved by the grotesque visions with which, owing to bodily weakness, his diseased imagination surrounded him, and which he believed to be real. Solitude This relates to into the wild because the whole quote relates to the main character of into the wild.
Quote 2-I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. Solitude This quote talks about being alone and the main character from into the wild goes to Alaska to be alone and learn about himself.
quote 3- Children, who play life, discern its true law and relations more clearly than men, who fail to live it worthily, but also think that they are wiser by experiance, that is, by failure. Solitude is related to Into the Wild because it shows how McCandless doesn't want to waste his life and and he wants to live a worthy life and not waste his life with material things.---Mark D.

  3. 1. " We meet at very short intervals, not having had time to acquire any new value for each other."

Not knowing the time and place makes rushing an impossibility. This quote could refer to the world not being known as much as it could refer to people.

    2. "Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. I drink at it; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is."

Time is ever fleeting. To a normal mortal existence time is but a shallow pond and perhaps Chris's reference to not wanting to know the time was fear of learning how much water is left in the pond.

    3. "When we are unhurried and wise, we perceive that only great and worthy things have any permanent and absolute existence, that petty fears and petty pleasures are but the shadow of the reality."

This quote shows what Chris believed going into his endeavor. Time, scedulals, work, and manufactured pleasures are temporary. Time is not needed for great things, for great things are permanent in their nature.

  4. "Why should we with such hurry and waste of life?"
I chose this quote because it says pretty much the same thing, which is that time is unneccessay.

"When we are unhurried and wise, we perceive that only great and worthy things have any permanent and absolute existence, that petty fears and petty pleasures are but the shadow of the reality."
This quote describes how Chris thinks that most things are temporary, while the truely great things in life are permanent

"Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. I drink at it; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is."
I chose this quote because Chris did not take anything to tell what time it was; Chris did not want to realize how short time really was, and thought that he could just go away for a little while and come back like nothing had happened.

  5. Quote #1- "Why should we with such hurry and waste of life?" Page 902
I choose this quote because it pertains to the main idea of the quote that Chris had said. One of the main reasons he went out into the woods was to live life. He thinks its a waste of time knowing time because time shouldn't matter how you live your life so why worry about it.

Quote #2- " That man who does not believe that each day contains an earlier, more sacred, and auroral hour than he has yet profaned, has despaired of life, and is pursuing a descending and darkening way." Page 900
I choose this quote because I feel like if he had time, his life would revolve around it. He would be unable to see the pureness of life.

Quote #3 "I went into the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, dicover that I had not lived." Page (901)
I choose this quote because I feel like this was one of the major points that Chris went out into the wildreness to live the life we wanted to. He didn't want to die and dicovered he had not lived. He didn't care to know what time it was because he felt like it would hold him back from living.

  6. "simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!"
All Chris McCandles wants in his life is to live in total bliss, by the simplicity of nature.

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life..."
This would describe Chris' thoughs exactly. He wanted to go into the wild and really live life to the fullest. If not, then he would never be satisfied.

"Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life...When we are unhurried and wise, we perceive that only great and worthy things have any permanent and absolute existence, that petty fears and petty pleasures are but the shadow of the reality."
Chris McCandless was in no hurry in his life. He was not concerned with the quantity of life, but the quality. And he refused to pay any attention to petty unimportant things.
