  2. 11. He left his car behind because after a flash flood the car's engine got wet and he didn't wait for it to dry, and the car's battery died.

    12. This "Emmerson high" is a reference to his disobedience. He passed signs which said that off roading was is strictly forbidden. He felt this way because he was flouting the laws of the state. He was following the teaching of Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience."

    13. The element that was in "Civil Disobedience" was moral enthusiasm. Chris felt this way because it said that it is your civil duty to flout the laws of the state. Thoreau feels like the government should have minimal interference with the people it governs. "All men recognize the right of revolution; that is, the right to refuse allegiance to, and to resist, the government." This quote is from Civil Disobediance, and talks about how people have the responsibility to not follow the laws of the government.

  3. 11) Chris leaves the yellow Datson without the license plates in the park because he can't get it out in time for the flood. He buries the plates because he doesn't want people to know whose it was.

12)This Giddy Emersonian High is one that shows how great the nature and living on the road made him feel. Chris applies the concepts of Trancendentalism to his life but surviving not off society. But, of the good hearts of people around him and living off nature. Chris loved this idea and it made him happier than anything. The Context is that he didn't Emerson was right when saying that people could free themselves with nature. It also showed that this is how Chris was freeing himself.

13)Chris felt this way because he looked up to Thoreau. He took this as gospel because he wanted to try to be like Thoreau just as we strive to be like Jesus. Chris took this essay seriously and it shows because in "Into the Wild" Chris states "He took it as his moral responsibility to flout the laws of the state." This shows that he agreed with Thoreau because in Thoreau's "On The Duty Of Civil Disobediance" Thoreau states "That government is best which governs least" This shows that he too tries to reject the laws of the government. It also shows the Thoreau is against lwas and government.

14)Krakauer believed that Chris buring the money would make Thoreau proud in many ways. First it showed that he was going against governmental views that money was important. It also shows that he does not care about taxes and Thoreau states "I have paid no poll tax for six years. I was put into a jail once on this account, for one night." So neither man cares about money as society views it. It also shows that Chris was determined to "Live off the Land" instead of live off societal ways. Thoreau would be proud of Chris' determination and will power to complete the task he set out for himself.

15)The surname "Supertramp" refers to Chris because he was "tramping" around the country. "Tramping" in the book refers to going around trying to hitchhike and get to Alaska by only those means. So he is trying to be the best "Tramper" there is.

16)Krakauer is able to tell us of Chris' adventures because Chris made a journal-snapshot photo album. He left this journal with Wayne Westerburg before he went to Alaska for safekeeping.

  5. 11.) The reason for him leaving the car was just incase that he had survive he could go back and collect the supplies her left. He put in that specfic spot is because he thought it was deserted.
12.) This follows the context of what were learning is that he was excited to live out the ideas of Emerson. Chris applies the ideas out by he is living with the wilderness and also that he lives by the way Emerson thought of government.
13.) Chris felt this way because he wanted to live out the ideas Emerson had so when he read the reading he took it as literal because Emerson wrote it. A gospel itself can tell the story about a person's life so that's how it would be thought of as a "gospel".......

  6. 11, Chris leaves the yellow datson with no license plate in the park because he cant get it out before the flood. He hides n buries the license plates so noone knows its his
12, The Giddy Emersonian high is someone who shows great interest in Emerson's transcendentalism and nature living outside of society made him feel great. The context of this shows us the elements of nature Emerson taught and all his concepts of living away from society in nature. Chris's life Shows transcendentalism because he is living by himself in nature just as Emerson taught and he is as close to nature as possible.
13, Chris took it as Gospel becasue one of his inspiring idols wrote it. Chris also belived in this as Gospel because he was a free person who did whatever he wanted with no rules. "That government is best which governs least" -Civil disobedience "Considered it his moral responsibility to flout the laws of the state" - Into the Wild. Both these quotes talk about the same thing, not liking the form of government and how we should have more freedom. These quotes prove Chris followed it as Gospel. Moral enthusism is the element of transcendentalism used in Civil Disobedience.
14, Chris burning his money was a bold statement. This action would have made Thoreau proud because It shows he doesn't care for governmental money. It also shows he wants to befree from society and he doesn't care for other governmental things such as taxes etc. "I have paid no poll tax for six years. I was put into a jail once on this account, for one night" This quote shows that government doesn't matter and it should include more freedom than it does.
15, The word Tramp means hitch hiking and Chris needs skill at hitch hiking in order to even make it close to the trail in Alaska or to nature at all.
16,Krakauer Is able to tell us because Chris Made a snapshot photo album and handed it to WAyne Westerburg for safe keeping while he was in Alaska. Mark D

  7. 11. i left my thrifty car in the national park becuase there was an epic flood, tis flood caused me to bail on my belongings. These belongings included my car. I took the valuables out of it, and removed the license plates. I took the license plates off because i needed
to make sure that there wasn't way that the authorities could identify me.
    12. This concept means that i was exploring the essence of transecendentalism. I was living in the nature, surviving off of its supplies. i belive John meant that i was looking like i was happy and really enjoying nature and living in it.
    13. In the gospel it shows the element of moral entusiasm as well as anti- aristocraticy. " a governmeant is best, which governs least." i would completely agree with this statement. It parralells with my story, in that it i tried living a life without the governmeant. I tried to escape the governmeant. i tried living a life without the neccisity of the government,i was able to do this and belive that the quote scene withi my so called, " Gospel", is a perfect example of what i belive in.

  8. 11. The cars engine was flooded and he was forced to ditch his car. He Removed the license plate so that the autorities would not be able to identify him.
    12. It didnt matter to Chris that he had nearly no peossessions or his beloved car after the flood. He was for the first time in his life truly happy, and it was all due to his independance out in the wilderness. He didnt need any of those things. All he needed was nature and God. Chris exhibits the qualities of a true transcendentalist.
    13. "Chris considered it his moral responsibility to flout the laws of the state"- Into the Wild. "That government is best which governs least"- Civil Disobedience. Both of these quotes are getting across the same message, in that the government can only hold someone back. The less influence of government, the better off we'll be. Chris was very independant and becasue of this, wanted neither interferance or help from anyone, including our government.
    14. Chris was freeing himself from the binds and constraints of government and begginning his epic journey into the wild. He wuldnt need mney where he was going, and taking that final leap is what would make him a true transcendentalist.
    15. Supertramp was taken from one of his favorite books, and his inspiration to go on this journey. The word tramp refers to a wanderer or traveler.
    16. Chris had made a photo album, which he gave to Wayne Westerberg before he started his Alaskan odyssey.

  10. 17)Chris prepared himself by buring his winchester rifle, burining his money, took a journal-snapshot album to document his travles, did a lot of thumbing, sent letters to the people he cared about and the people that he met along the way, and carried lots of rice with him.

18)we learn the Chris's parents are getting extremely worried by his dissapperance. They contacted the Annadale police and hired a private investigator. They found out about his donating all his money to OXFAM and that worried them greatly. It shows that they truely loved him, and he threw it all away.

  12. 14. John thought that i would have made Thoreau proud by burning my money. I agree with this statement, i did it so that i could be free of any government related things. This would include money, I was begginning my journey into the wilderness and needed to keep it as pure as nature is. I had no use for money, you don't need it when your in the wild. there is also no use for government in nature, it is something way greater than government, it is surviving.
    15. The word tramp means, wanderer or a traveler, which i was doing. I was trying to be a super traveler and i thought the name would help the cause. I needed all the support and confidence I could get, and if a better name was what i needed, a better name i would get.
    16. The reason John was able to tell alot of people about my journey was because of the fantastic people i met over the course of my journey. There was also a phoo album of which i gave to my buddy Wayne. Alot of the people I met, including Wayne, remember my story and meeting me very vividly.
    17. To prepare for my journey i went on a pre journey in the waters on the west coast. i traveled only by canoe and it was very rough. i also traveled throughout Mexico, this was also not a very pleasent journey.
    18. My parents did not handle my leave of absence very well at all. from what i heard they paniced, and were very scared about what i was doing. They hired many detectives to try to find me throughout the country. However they were disappointed to see that none of the detectives could find me.

  13. 14. Chris burning his money showed that he was going against governmental views that money was important. It also shows that he does not care about taxes and Thoreau states "I have paid no poll tax for six years. Neither Chris nor Thoreau cared about money. It also shows that Chris was determined to "Live off the land" instead of live off of the typical views of society. Thoreau would be proud of Chris' determination and will power to complete the task he set out for himself.

    15. The last name Supertramp means that he marches on without stopping, and he continues on his voyage throughout Mexico and on to Alaska.

    16. Krakauer was able to tell Chris' story because of a couple reasons. First, he kept a scrap book full of pictures he took. Secondly, he kept a journal about his travels.

    17. Chris is preparing for his Alaskan Odyssey by going throughout Mexico and Southwest America. He also was surviving on the very little food that he managed to get from the sea.

    18. His parents Walt and Billie were terribly concerned over Chris' vanishing act, and had contacted the Annandale police. They also hired a private investigator who would track him down

    20. Chris' style of writing is in the third person. He also writes in a little bit of a Puritan writing style, as in he writes very simply.

  17. ...The quotes that I have chosen to compare are "Chris considered it his moral responsibility to flout the laws of the state"- Into the Wild. "That government is best which governs least"- Civil Disobedience. Both these quotes are the same because both are saying that government can only limit people not help. The theme of Transcenddentalism that was seen in the essay was moral ethusiasm (anti- aristocracy).
14.) Krakauer said that it would have done Thoreau when Chris was burning his money because it was like burning the government in a way. Also that he wasn't going to be held back becaus ehe didn't have that much money so money really didn't matter to him. "I have paid no poll tax for six years. I was put into a jail once on this account, for one night." This quote explains that that government should give more freedom. The government limits the free will God had granted to us.
15.)The signifance of the last name is that it was one of his favortie books. " Tramping" is in a different context in the book than in life. In the book it refers to someone hiking and going out into the wildernesss to become one with nature.
16.) Krakauer was able to tell us the travels of Chris McCandless by he gave the journal to the guy that drove him up to Alaska.
17.) Chris was preparing for his Alaskan Odysessy was he got a full time job and also he would collect food. He got maps and things he would need to be out in the wild.
18.) We learn in this chapter that his parents hired a private investigator to try to find him. They were worried about him and they wanteed to find him. They also had a lot of questions for Chris about why and everything.
19.) July 6- arrived at Lake Mead National Park
October 1990- Park ranger found car
August 10- he got ticketed for hitchkiking
October 28, 1990- got a ride to Needles, CA
December 2, 1990- tried to sneak into Mexico
January 18, 1991- was back on US soil because he was caught by immigration
February 3- went to LA to find an id and a job
February 24- went to find car and he found no car just a few belongings
February 27- went in to Las Vegas
20.) Chris's jounrnal writing style is that he would be talking in 3rd person if his real name was Alex. He would refering to himself as his other name.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 11) Chris left his old yellow Datson, without license plates in Lake Mead National Recreation Area because he ran it off the road. The water caused the engine to flood and be damaged, so he decided to leave it there. When he left it there, he took the license plate off because he didn't want someone to trace the plate back to him, for his parents would know of his last location.
12.) Krakauer described Chris as having "a giddy Emersonian high" when he arrived at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area because he finally was feeling truly happy. He was getting to live the life he wanted to live and no one elses. The reason for him going into solitude was to feel become free and at one with nature and everything that goes along with it. He wants a simple life, and when he arrived at this place he knew he was starting his journey to the simple life.
13.) I feel Chris took this essay like a gospel to him because it explained exactly how he felt too. He agreed with the same theories as Thoreau and always wanted to live by them. The essay is all about how destructive the government is and that it basically does nothing good for the people. It explains how the government stops the people from living real lives and that society's beliefs are completely unethical. The quote "That government is best which governs least" from Civil Disobedience and the quote “Chris considered it his moral responsibility to flout the laws of the state” from Into the Wild show the similarities of how both authors think. These two quotes explain how the world would be better off without the works of government and that its views destruct societal life so much that people feel the need to get away from it to be free.
14.) Krakauer believed that Chris burning the money would make Thoreau proud because that action meant turning away from the government. It meant disbelieving in all of societies views and not caring about living life like everyone else. It showed that he didn’t want to be restricted by the government anymore and that he really was going to set off into nature and stay there. Burning the money was the first step to following those certain theories and fulfilling what he’s been wanting to do.
15.) Chris changed his last name to “Supertramp” and by looking at the reading it’s obvious that there is a significant reason he chose this name. It fits Chris and who he is because the word means traveler. He wanted his last name to signify what he was doing and that he was a strong voyager. He wanted this name to give him inspiration to live up to it.
16.) Krakauer was able to write this book about Chris’ life and travels because of a few reasons. Chris made a journal and a snapshot photo album. He gave it to Wayne Westernburg before leaving to Alaska and that’s how Krakauer retrieved it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 17.) Throughout Chapter 4, Chris prepared himself for the Alaskan “Odyssey” by taking a journal and a snapshot photo album to capture and describe all of his travels, sent letters to different people in his life, and collected food.
18.) In this chapter, we learn that Chris’ parents were very concerned and anxious to learn where their son was. They hired private investigators and different kind of detectives to go on the look for him. They searched everywhere, contacted many people, but no one could find out where he was, so they panicked even more.
19.) July 6, 1990- Chris arrived in Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

August 10, 1990- Chris was ticketed for hitchhiking.
October 1990- The park ranger found Chris’ car.

October 28, 1990- Chris hitchhiked up to Needles, California. He paddled a canoe down to Mexico.

December 2, 1990- Chris tried sneaking across the Mexican border.

January 16, 1991- Chris leaves the canoe and walks the deserted beach.

January 18, 1991- Chris was caught by immigration sneaking into the United States, then was arrested and went to prison for the night.

February 3, 1991- Chris went to L.A. to get a job and an ID back.

February 27, 1991- He buried his backpack in the desert. He then went to Las Vegas with nothing.
20.) Chris’ writing style in this portion was written in the third person. He was referring to himself as his other name, Alex.

  20. 19. July 6- I arrived at Lake Mead National Park in Arizona
October 1990-The park ranger found my car without any license plates
August 10- I snatched up a ticket for hitchhiking in a place where i wasn't supposed to
October 28, 1990- Found a ride to Needles, CA and got myself up there
December 2, 1990- I tried to go into Mexico, i wasn't positive that i was there or not, nor was i aware i wasn't supposed to be there.
January 18, 1991- I got snatched up by the feds and they sent me back to the US
February 3- Went up to LA to try to find a job, i used my original name and ID
February 24- Went back to Mead park to see if anything was in my car still, just to find out that the only thing left was my license plates that had been hidden
February 27- I buried my backpack on my way to Las Vegas, i was planning on starting from nothing.
    20. I wrote in third person so that people would read it and not be confused at all. I called myself my original name which is Alex, i did this so that if someone was looking for me they would know my story and what i have been doing. I tried talking very carefully so that i would not get out of hand or anything.

  21. 17. To prepare for his "Alaskan Odyssey", Chris worked a full time job, bought a bit a gear that he would need on his journey, and even made a photo album documenting his journey.
18.His parents were genuinely worried about their son. they had no idea what had become of him, as Chris made sure to erase any trace of where he had been or was going. His parents even went so far as to hire a team of investigators to aid in his search, but not even they prevailed.

  23. 11. Chris abandoned his car because the engine was flooded out and he did not have the patience to fix it.

    12. The "giddy Emersonian high" that Krakauer writes about is referencing the danger and excitement that Chris thrives for. When Chris first came to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, he had ignored warnings stating that he was in a off road, driving strictly forbidden areas. This applies to transcendentalism because you are supposed to live free with your own will, obeying nobody's rules, but yourselves. Chris is applying concepts of transcendentalism by living individually and independently. Throught his journies he is discovering his true being and living it out for no one, but himself.

  24. 14. Chris burning his money would have made Thoreau proud because he was freeing himself of things he didnt need. To both of them, money wasn't a neccesity but more like a desire. Also, it was another way of getting away from the government.

    15. I think that Chris' new last name "Supertramp" really fits him. I think this because the word "tramp" means wanderer or taveler. Chris is a man of the wilderness and spends his time traveling in the wild.

    16. He is able to tell readers about Chris' events because he left many photo snapshots of his journies.

    17. Chris prepares himself for the Alaskan "odyssey" by bringing rice, burning his money, getting rid of his identity, and making a commitment to sticking it out in the wild.

  25. 13. Chris took Thoreau's piece of work, On the Duty of Civil Disobedience, as the "gospel" because he wanted to live out the ways of Thoreau in a sense. Chris studied Thoreau throughout college, and developed an admiration for him. He was inspired to the live the ways of Thoreau. "Unjust laws exist: shall we be content to obey them, or shall we endeavor to amend them, and obey them until we have succeeded, or shall we transgress them at once?" Thoreau talks about laws being unjust, and that if you think they unjust then you do not have to follow them. He basically says that a good government is no government. "Ignoring posted warnings that off-road driving is strictly forbidden, McCandles steered the Datsun off the pavement where it crossed a broad, sandy wash." In Chris' endeavors, he follows Thoreau's way of thinking by completely disobeying the signs that tell him he is prohibited from driving in that area. The element seen in On the Duty of Civil Disobedience is moral enthusiasm.

    14. Krakauer believed that Chris burning his money would do Thoreau proud because Thoreau did not believe in government and money has everything to do with government. Without the government, money would have no value, and nothing could be bought with it. Thoreau also states that the government is like a prison to man. This could reference that a person cannot buy certain material things because they do not have the money, but Chris burning his money would suggest that he did not want any material items, also saying that he thought nothing other than nature was important. And finally Thoreau states in his writing that to live with money, you can not truely live comfortably.

    15. The definition of tramp according to the english dictionary as a noun and verb is : 1. to walk long and far; hike. 4. to make ( a journey ) or traverse ( a place ), on foot labriously or wearily. 7. A person who travels on foot, usually with no permanent home, living by begging or doing casual work. I would say after looking at the definition, this name almost perfectly matches Chris, since he is on a journey, he has no home and he is traveling constantly to explore nature.

    16. Krakauer is able to tell us about the events that happened during Chris' travels because Chris kept a journal-snapshot album that he later left with Wayne Westerberg.

    17. In order to prepare himself for his Alaskan "odyssey" throughout Chapter 4, Chris documented his travels yet far by writing about his personal experiences and taking pictures. He traveled around Mexico and Southwest America. He gained food by sea, and also had already been carrying rice, and last, but not least, he sent any letter necessary before journeying out for good.

12.The Giddy Emersonian high is someone who has an interest in Emerson's transcendentalism and living in nature outside of society. This shows us the elements of nature Emerson taught and all his ideals of living away from society in nature. Chris's shows transcendentalism in his life because he ventures out into the wilderness to life on his own much like Thoreau only a much more extreme

14.Krakauer thought that Chris burning the money would make Thoreau happy because it was against normal societal views to burn money. Thoreau said "I have paid no poll tax for six years. I was put into a jail once on this account, for one night." and with Chris burning his money it shows he couldn't care less about taxes as well. Thoreau would be proud of Chris' because Chris is living out his idea better then he did.

    15. Supertramp was from one of Chris's favorite books and it refers to a traveler or wanderer, which Chris was. He travelled across America to get to Alaska for his odyssey.

16.Krakauer was able to tell Chris' story because he left a photo book filled with pictures he took along his journey and also Chris kept a journal which he wrote in everyday
