  1. One of the parallels between the two are that they both went into nature looking for a journey. They both lived life with the littlest of supplies. They both went into the nature living very simple lives while in the nature. Another parallel is that they both enjoy company and have a lover. Unfortunatley they can not be with their beloved companions.

  2. Some parallels are that they are both not completly seperated from company. They also enjoy having people around them. Another parallel is that they had a someone who loved them, but the age difference made it impossible for it to work. Chris does not want to waste his life. They also liked the simplicity of living in nature.

  3. Chris, like Thoreau, is trying to suck all the "marrow" out of life. This is shown on page 57 in his letter to Ron. Another is their great love for Alaska and how important it is to them. "I have my soul set entirely on my Alaskan Odyssey..." pg.56. The last is how they both had many friends whom he couldnt be with due to his lifestyle choice. "He'd successfully kep Jan Burres and Wayne Westerberg at arm's length, flitting out of their lives before anything was expected of him. And now he'd slipped painlessly out of Ron Franz's life as well." pg.55.

  4. Just as Thoreau, Chris was determined to do things on his own. "No. You don't get it. I'm going to San Diego. And I'm leaving on Monday" "Ok. I'll drive you there." "Don't be rediculous," McCandles scoffed.(pg. 52) Chris was a very intelligent, eduacated person, yet he wanted to live out transcendentalism. "Look, Mr. Franz," he declared, "you don't need to worry about me. I have a college education. I'm not destitute. I'm living like this by choice." (pg. 51)

  7. Thoreau and Chris were both trying to suck the marrow out of life. On page 57 in his letter to Ron you can see this. Another is how he loved Alaska and wanted to get everything out of it and go live there. "i have my soul set entirly on my alaskan Odyssey" 56 He had too many friends and had to change his life to get all he wanted out of it. "He'd successfully kept Jan and Wayne at arm's length, fitting out of their lives before anything was expected of him. And now he'd slipped painlessly out of ROn's life as well" 55 Mark D

  8. Chris was a lot like Thoreau. He was exteremly self-dependent. He wanted to do a lot of things on his own. A quote is on page 52 "No. You don't get it. I'm goint to San Diego. And I'm leaving Monday." "Ok. I'll drive you there." "Don't be rediculous," This shows that Chris wanted to complete his journey on his own. Another quote shows Chris' education. It shows he was educated but he wanted to live ot the ideals of Trancendentalism. THe quote is "Look, Mr. Franz, you do not need to worry about me. I have a college education. I'm not destitute. I'm living like this by choice." This quote is on page 51. On page 57, it tells how Chris was trying to suck the marrow out of life. This sounds like something that Thoreau would say and do. Another quote on page 56 is "I have my soul set entirely on my Alaskan Odyssey..." this is why he tried to stay distant from others.

  9. It would make sense that Chris and Thoreau have so much in common, because Thoreau is basically Chris’ idol. Like Thoreau, Chris wanted to live simply, in nature, and enjoyed literature. They both wanted to “suck the marrow out of life.” Also they both had had lovers at some point, which didn’t work out due to large age differences.

  10. Thoreau and Chris were alike in many different ways. They were both so independent and determined. They wanted to be the ones taking action and working for what they wanted and also making sure they do everything for themselves. An example of the parallel between these two was this quote on page 52. "Look, Mr. Franz, you do not need to worry about me. I have a college education. I'm not destitute. I'm living like this by choice."

    5. independence- see 4

    7. Solitude- Franz-“OK I’ll drive you there” Chris-“ Don’t be ridicules”

  12. They are similar in many different ways. First of all Thoreau is like Chris' idol and he really looks up to him. They both lived by Carpe Diem. Both of them also lived a more isolated life and wanted to do their own thing. They were also big readers and nature enthusiasts.

  13. Theses two men are very simliar in many different aspects. Like Thoreau, Chris was determined to do things on his own. "No. You don't get it. I'm going to San Diego. And I'm leaving on Monday" "Ok. I'll drive you there." "Don't be rediculous," McCandles scoffed.(pg. 52)Also It shows he was educated but he wanted to live ot the ideals of Trancendentalism "Look, Mr. Franz, you do not need to worry about me. 14. Some paralles between Chris and Thoreau are they both agree that the government should be less involved in the poeples lives. Also they loved the idea of an Alaskan odyssey and couldn't keep many friends because they were always on the move. Chris and thoreau are both very independant as well
