Question 42: Chapter 12

Billie states at the end of the chapter, "I just don't understand why he had to take those kind of chances...I just don't understand at all" (p. 132).

From what you have read thus far, why do you believe that he took those kind of chances? Why do you believe that he was able to leave his family behind, especially Carine?

Look at the situation from his familys' perspective, if you were in their position, would you understand what Chris did?

Pretend that you are Carine, if you were able to say something to Chris before his trip, or while he was on his trip to Alaska, what would you say to him?

Respond to the questions above with depth and specificity.

  1. I believe that Chris took those chances because he wanted to find happiness. He was unhappy on the path he was going down and he decided to make a change. Chris did not want to look back on his life and find that he was not truely happy with what he achieved/didn't achieve. Chris also wanted to proove that he could survive off just he land. I believe that he was able to leave his family behind because they didn't see eye to eye, so that made it easier. He was fed up with his family and they didn't understand him at all. Carnie was hard to leave behind for him, but he needed to find happiness for himself before he could make her happy. I would understand why Chris had to do it. I would want my family member to be happy, and if that is what it took, i would have to support him. Finally, if I were Carnie, I would tell Chris to stay safe. I would tell him to send a post-card if he got the chance. And most importantly, I would tell Him that I loved him.

  2. I believe Chris took all these risks because all he wanted was true happiness. He knew he would only find it out there in nature. Society wasn’t what was right for him and it never would have been. He took so many chances to break free from what everyone around him tried to tell him and live a life that he always wanted. I believe he was able to leave his family behind like that because they never really understood him. They weren’t accepting of his views and beliefs, and Chris knew that was true. He was probably just sick of hearing them say words that didn’t matter to him. He knew he was going to stick to what he wanted to do so he just ended up going for it, whether they liked it or not. Carnie was definitely really hard to leave behind for Chris. If he had another choice of being truly happy and going for what he wanted besides going out to Alaska, then he probably would’ve taken it just for her, but the thing is that there wasn’t. So he had to do this to make himself happy before he could make her happy.

  3. I believe Chris took those chances because it was what made him truly happy and free. I think that he was just craving that freedom from society and his parents. He didn't fit society's image, nor his parents. I think thats what made it so easy for him to take those chances. I'm sure it was very hard to leave his sister Carine, because they were so close but I also think that he knew it was what was best for him. Since Carine understood him, he probably thought she'd understand why he was doing this. If i was in his family's perspective, I honestly would have a hard time understanding his decision to just leave. It would really hurt me, especially if he was my brother. If i was Corine I would ask Chris why he wouldn't tell me, the only person who understands him, why he would just disappear, not even assuring me that he is okay.

  4. I think Chris took the chances because it made him truly free and jubilant. i believe he just wanted to be away from society and people in general. He doesn't fit in the city and society. This is what made it so easy for him to make risky chances. Chris had trouble leaving his sister because he loved her and was close to her but he knew what had to be done. He thought his sister would understand because she understands him as a person. If i was a part of Chris' family i would completely understand that that was what he wanted to do with his life and would have little trouble when he left. If i was his sister i would be a little flustered that Chris didn't tell me because we were so close

  5. I believe one of the reasons that Chris took so many risks was because of how strict his father was with him. I also believe that he was very influenced by the books he read. He read a lot of books that entailed stories about how people should break off from society. These sorts of chances are the things that made Chris happy, so he continued to do them because of that. I believe leaving his parents was not a dilemma in Chris;s mind. However i do believe that him leaving his sister was very tough for him because of how close they were. If i were Carine and could say one other thing to Chris it would probably be asking him to write to me. I believe if anything Carine would have really been content with Chris writing to her often.

  6. I believe that he felt that he had to take these chances is because he felt trap in the society and in the family he had. Also that he ideas and values weren't shared with hsi family. He felt that his only escape was in nature, there he could true be understood. This is also why it was easy for him to leave them even though he loved them. I wouldn't be able to truely understand why he left if he was his family is because I wouldn't have understood his real feelings and ideas about life. If I was his sister and I would say something to him before he left on his trip would suggest to bring more supplies. I would tell him I support him going on his jounrney but want him to be more safe.

  7. Chris was stifled by his parents. Chris, influenced by transcendentalism, wanted more freedom, and thus didn't see eye to eye with his parents. With the freedom he gained on his journey, he took risks. This is a similar event to what happens when kids go off to college. They abuse their freedom and take unneeded risks. I couldn't imagine being in his parents shoes. The job of any parent is to protect their child, above all else! I could live with myself letting him go off and die as he did. Many children don't appreciate the work of their parents. Chris didn't seem like those people. I would ask him to always remember if he needed me for anything I would find and help him no matter how far he was.

  8. I think that Chris to the chances that he did because that is what made him happy. It was his own way of letting go and clearing his mind. We all have our own was of dealing with our feelings and issues and this was Chris' way of dealing. I think that to him this was the only way he could really get away from everything. You can tell that the stress of the so called "normal" society he lived in was just too much for Chris. If I was Chris' family i don't really think i would be able to figure out why he left. If i was his sister though i would probably try to convince him to at the least prepare a little more. I would also be happy with him writing to me too.

  9. I believe that Chris felt that he had to take all of those chances in order to truly live life to the fullest. I also think that taking that final step and completely freeing himself from the constraints of society and his parents was something that wasnt very difficlt for Chris. He was influenced by the books he read to hate whatt society was becoming, and leving his parents was easy enough because he never thought that they really understood him and what he truly wanted out of life. However, leaving his beloved sister Carine was something difficult i'm sure, but i think he was aablt to do it becasue he knew that his sister understood him better than anyone else, and she knew exactly why he was doing what he was doing. if I was Carine, I would have told Chris that I loved him and that i would kill him if he didnt come back.

  10. I believe that Chris took the chances that he took because he carried an excitement for adventure, he had an addiction to fear. Chris wanted to live out the life style of transcendentalism. Thoreau and Emerson inspired him to live out the ways that they theorized about. As for his family, I think he was able to leave his family behind because he knew that they would never accept him. He was aware that they did not know who he really was so maybe he was convinced that they would never miss him. I do not understand how he was able to leave his sister unless he thought that it would better her situation. I know that I would never be able to leave any of my brothers or sisters unless I knew that it would be for their better. But in Chris' case I can not think of any reasons why leaving his little sister would better her.

If I was Chris' parents, I think I would be able to understand what Chris did for the most part. He was angry at them for scolding him about his first trip and telling him to never do anything like that again, so of course, he might have gone on the trip in spite of them. And I'm sure they understood because of the fact of how much they told him they were worried about him when he left on his first trip, they understoond why he didn't keep in contact for a little while, but I would not understand why he didn't keep in contact for about two years. That I would not understand ever, and I'm sure neither would anyone's parents.

If I was Carine, I would not beg Chris to stay. I would understand his reasoning to leaving and I would accept the fact that he was leaving. I would tell him that I did not care if he kept in contact with the family, but he would have to keep in contact with me, weekly, or even daily if possible. I would also tell him that if he was in any danger and he needed help, that he could call me and I would do my best of ability to help him. I would tell him that I love him, that I have always accepted him and I always will. Fully.

  11. I think Chris took all of the risks and chances because he was sheltered by his parents. When Chris went off on his odyssey he felt free and able to do anything he wanted to. Also i think Chris was influenced by the books he read. HE was into Emmerson, Thoreau, and Jack London who were powerful transcendentalists and Chris agreed with and understood what they spoke about. Chris didnt fit in with society so he decided to make his own society, out in nature. It was probably easy for Chris to leave his parents because he felt like they weren't there for him so why should he be there for them? if i was Carnie i would tell Chris that i loved him and it would kill me if anything happened to him and he didn't come back home
