Question 36: Chapter 8

Find five similarities and five differences between "The Major of Hippie Cove,"Gene Rosellini, and Chris McCandless. The excerpts with Rosellini, that will help in answering this question, are on pages 72-75. The information of Chris that you can utilize is that which you gained from prior reading. Then, I would like you to do the same in comparing and contrasting, finding parallels between, Chris and John Waterman (pgs 77-80). Lastly, do the same with McCunn (pgs 80-85). Why do you believe that Krakauer incorporated those three stories into the novel?

In order to gain an A on this assessment, you must make textual references and include page numbers.

  1. Gene Rosellini VS Chris McCandless
    Similarities
1.) Untidy and scruffy in appearance
2.) Choose to go by a made-up name
3.) In their youths, each man was an exceptional athlete and brilliant scholar
4.) They both attempted to live in the most natural ways possible
5.) Both men end up dying during/near the end of their expeditions.
    Differences
1.) Age (Chris was in his 20’s and Gene was in his 40’s)
2.) Gene was devoted to ambitious anthropological experiments once he got to Alaska.
Chris didn’t really have a plan, and just wanted to live simply and happily.
3.) Gene had goals, and was prepared, where Chris was not.
4.) Chris lived in solitude. Gene lived in a community and had contact with people.
5.) Rosallini committed a straight-forward suicide, by stabbing himself. McCandless died from starvation and cold out in the wild.
    John Waterman VS Chris McCandless
    Similarities
1.) Chris and John were both born in the same Washington DC suburbs.
2.) Both men were brought hiking/rock climbing by their parents as children.
    3.) Both were good athletes
4.) Both were perceived as a little odd by their peers.
5.) At one point during their journeys, both men had to stop and get minimum-wage jobs to earn some money.
    Differences
1.) John is describe as very awkward
2.) John acted far more strange then Chris did during college, in the way that he dresses and acted.
3.) John was crushed as a teen by the fact that his parents split up and his father abandoned him and his brothers. Chris’ parents were at least loving.
4.) Many of John’s close friends and companions died, committed suicide, or were severely cripple in life. Chris did not have to endure these misfortunes.
5.) John was always well prepared for his expeditions, and usually survived.
    Carl McCunn VS Chris McCandless
    Similarities
1.) Both Chris and Carl made small, obvious mistakes, which turned out to be fatal.
2.) Carl and Chris’ personalities are described as very intelligent, but yet a little dreamy, flamboyant, and impulsive.
3.) Chris and Carl both went on adventures to in the Alaskan wilderness
4.) Carl and Chris were in love with a woman at some point, but it did not work out.
5.) Both men brought a gun with them.
    Differences
1.) Carl was from Texas, but Chris was from Washington DC
2.) Carl moved to Texas first because of the oil boom and to get a job, not for adventure.
3.) Chris actually had a purpose for being abandoned in the wilds of Alaska for a few months; to capture photography.
4.) Originally, Carl did not want to go into the wild alone. He wanted to take a woman with him.
5.) Carl had more unrealistic expectations that someone would eventually save him.

I think that Krakauer felt the need to incorporate these three stories into the book because they show some insight into Chris and his way of thinking and living, by studying examples of similar men.
