Krakauer writes in Chapter 17, "I guess I just can't help identifying with the guy"(p 185). Krakauer makes the claim that everyone in some way can relate to Chris. Is this an empty claim made without sufficient evidence as it does not apply to you or do you agree with Krakauer in that Chris speaks to you in some way, but not necessarily every way?
This question requires you to externalize your personal response as well as recall characteristics of Chris to best formulate an answer. You will need 5 characteristics total. If you believe that he speaks to you in some aspect, then write the characteristic and how it applies to you. If you believe the contrary, then write a characteristic and why that does not represent you. You may mix it up with some characteristics that apply as well as some that don't apply.
Ms. Lanese's Example-
1) Characteristic: Unpreparedness- Chris was not properly prepared for his Alaskan odyssey. As Krakauer stated, Chris should have brought "a large caliber rifle, map, compass, and ax" with him, which would have aided in survival (180). This characteristic is not a representation of Ms. Lanese because as a teacher she spends an extensive amount of time making sure that her classes are filled with creativity and substance. If Ms. Lanese was inadaquately prepared, then this would lead to an unproductive day for all of her students.

I think that Chris could inspire anyone and everyone in at least one way. Maybe not every characteristic he has is beneficial, but there are a great span of traits he has that are inspiring. Chris is brave, he went out into the wild alone. A lot of people are afraid to do a lot of things alone. Going off to college, starting your life all by yourself, even things like walking to your car at night, or being home alone, let alone being in the middle of nowhere with no one, but yourself to rely on.
ReplyDeleteChris went against society to be himself. A big trait that Chris carried was individualism. Chris was not afraid to be his own person. Chris would make statements like taking off his socks right after work, or not following the correct format on a paper because he thinks that it makes no sense, his biggest statement was going out into the wild not caring that people thought he was a wacko for doing so.
Chris was smart. Period. Chris had the credentials to get into Harvard, of course, he didn't use them which is sometimes frowned upon, but that did not make him dumb. Chris had been able to bring home -A's so easily since grade school. People in the presence of Chris could tell that he was very intelligent just by the way he spoke.
Chris was naive. He was smart, but that doesn't mean that he was not naive. Chris came unprepared. Maybe coming unprepared was like making a statement, but instead of not bringing the right things, he could have brought things he needed, but just not used them until he had a fallout.
Chris was selfish. In not all ways, but Chris left his family and his sister. He left them without telling them where he was going. He did not contact his parents while he was away. He left them to worry about him and wonder until the day they received his death notice. If Chris was more unselfish he should have at least wrote them and let them know that he was okay every once and a while.
Chris is story is one everyone can relate to because everyone fights for something everyday. We all strive forward for something even against our own limitation. These journeys are doomed to fail. Why then do we do it? If our struggle helps humanity to overcome its limitations as a whole it was all worth our individual pain.
ReplyDeleteChris was naive and under prepared. No man can anticipate every possible outcome, so in a way we tackle all our problems under-prepared. Chris however was in a more dire situation, however. Chris is no role model. His story though is an example of human struggle against our own self-imposed problems and our built in limitations.
In the book "nature" by Ralph Emerson. It is said that nature is a metaphor for the human mind. "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer is the proof for that quote.

Chris can definitely speak to everyone in at least one way. He has such a span of different characteristics that many people carry and can relate to. I can find some traits Chris had that can relate to myself. Some of his traits could help himself and the people around him while some weren’t as positive. Chris was very smart, for he probably could have gotten into some of the best colleges out there. He always got A’s on his tests and report cards and even spoke in an intelligent manner. Chris was also naïve, in the sense that he went into the wild very unprepared. He brought only a little amount of supplies that barely got him anywhere. He was so smart but was obviously too naïve to believes he could have survived out in nature for such a long period of time without the necessary items he didn’t have. Chris was also kind of selfish. He left his family, especially Carine, and a lot of his close friends to go out into nature. He knew there was a possibility of death, but he only cared about himself and what he wanted to do. That could be a positive thing, but very negative as well since he left all those people to mourn after his death. Chris was self confident and this shows because of the way he does things for himself. He acts the way he wants to and expresses his feelings toward nature and society very openly. He didn’t care how everyone else felt about him. Chris also carried individualism. He didn’t mind being out in nature by himself or feeling alone. He kept to himself for a long period of time and felt happiness doing it. He never really had a problem relying on only himself and his Alaskan Odyssey proved that.

Chris was a little bit on the selfish side. He didnt tell his family or loved ones where he was going. He didnt tell them how he was living. And at some points his family didnt even know that he was alive. This is very selfish of Chris to do to the people that cared about him most.
Chris was a very educated young man. He could have gotten into HARVARD. He could have done anything he wanted with his life and yet he followed his dreams. His grades speak for themselves, but he was an educated adn smart young man.
